Mental Health Can Be Visible and Invisible

When we think about health, we often think about what we can see: a cast on a broken arm, a limp, or a visible rash. But not all health issues are physical or visible — and mental health is one of the most important areas where visibility can be misleading.

The Visible Signs of Mental Health Struggles

Sometimes, mental health challenges manifest in ways that are outwardly noticeable. A person might show signs of distress, such as:

  • Sudden mood swings
  • Social withdrawal
  • Changes in appearance or hygiene
  • Uncharacteristic irritability or fatigue

What You Can Do

  • Be kind — always. You never know what someone is carrying silently.

  • Ask twice. If someone says they’re fine, gently check in again.

  • Encourage open conversations. Create space for honesty without judgment.

  • Learn the signs. Educate yourself on both the visible and subtle indicators of mental distress.
